Unicorns in Tech Code of Conduct

Unicorns in Tech is a growing community pushing for diversity and inclusion within tech. With that mission in mind we need to hold ourselves and every community member accountable to uphold our common vision and interact as equals.

A code of conduct is UiT’s promise to provide that safety and freedom for community growth, and provides guidelines for how we interact with each other, and how violations of these guidelines are responded to.

This Code of Conduct applies to all community members and people engaging with our platforms. It applies to all Unicorn in Tech spaces, including Slack, social groups on LinkedIn and Facebook, our Instagram accounts, and all social events, both online and off. Some spaces may have additional rules in place, which will be made clearly available to all participants.

1. COMMUNITY VALUES

Promote and support diversity and inclusion

We recognise and celebrate our differences, and work together to find solutions for our common challenges as part of one or several minority groups.

Inclusive language

We encourage all members to share or display their pronouns after their names or in their profiles on all digital communication platforms so that everyone can be addressed correctly.

Gender neutral language should be used to diminish gender divides and avoid unfavourably categorising or excluding people. At the very least, that means replacing “guys”, “ladies” and equivalents with “folks”, “people”, “everyone” etc. For more information on inclusive language, check out this link.

Uplifting community

The community exists to support and uplift its members. This can be done by community members engaging in conversations, asking and answering questions and sharing resources and competences. No one is obliged to share their knowledge, but participation should contribute to engaging and supporting others.

2. UNWELCOME BEHAVIOUR

Harassment

Unicorns in Tech is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone interacting with the community and our platforms, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, age, race, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of, or by, members in any form.

Privacy Breach

Privacy and confidentiality is of utmost importance, and sensitive information or personal details being shared should be respected and kept between the sharing parties. Privacy also encompasses members’ rights to not participate in conversations that do not serve them.

Spam

Spam through our digital platforms, for example posting the same message several times and/or on several channels, is not welcome. We reserve the right to delete the spam messages or ban the user of the channel.

3. VIOLATIONS, REPORTING AND CONSEQUENCES

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact the group or channel administrator.

If a member engages in harassing behaviour, the administrator may take any action they deem appropriate, taking into consideration potential needs or wishes of the person or people who have been unfairly treated. Consequences may include expulsion from our platforms and identifying the member publicly as someone about whom we’ve received complaints.

Credit and suggestions for additions

This code of conduct has been written using elements from Geek Feminism’s Community Anti-Harassment Policy.
